The speaker received his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo in Electrical Engineering in 1983. He received an IBM Postdoctoral Fellowship and was a member of the Mathematical Sciences Department at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Lab from 1983-1984. In 1984 he received the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) University Research Fellowship which he held from 1984-1993 at the University of Toronto and University of Waterloo. He was a Visiting Scientist at the Mathematical Sciences Group at Shell Research , Amsterdam in 1993-1994. Since 1998, he is the current Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo.
