Who Am I?

My name is Sasha Soraine and I'm a full-time PhD Student at McMaster University.

I currently am part of the Games Scalability Lab (G-ScalE) in the Department of Computing and Software. My supervisor is Dr. Jacques Carette.

I did my Bachelors of Engineering degree in Software Engineering and Game Design at McMaster from 2011 to 2015. While that program is no longer being offered, it was a great experience that allowed me to explore video games as a systems design problem.

Career Goals

I am working towards becoming a full time professor working in the area of game studies with a focus on human-computer interaction.

My Research Interests

I'm interested in the following areas of research:

  • Gameplay design
  • Cognitive ergonomics of video games
  • Human-Computer Interaction

My current research touches on all of these areas. I am examining gameplay challenges to understand the cognitive and motor processes necessary to complete them, in order to better understand the sources of difficulty of gameplay challenges. The purpose of this is to create a design framework to discuss difficulty in regards to the human mechanics of a game and by extension discuss and critique gameplay accessibility.

Outside of Work

Outside of work I have many different hobbies and passions.

I have a normal grey cockatiel named Falco who spends his days eating or sitting at the computer with me.

I spend a lot of my free time playing different video games. Video games have been a hobby of mine for as long as I can remember. While I can't name my top five games of all time, some series that I enjoy are:

  • Devil May Cry
  • Legend of Zelda
  • Final Fantasy
  • Kingdom Hearts
  • Harvest Moon
  • Pokemon

I also like to attend conventions and try my hand at amateur cosplay. Some costumes that I've made are:

  • Link, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • Haruhi Suzumiya, The Melancholy of Haurhi Suzumiya
  • Tifa Lockhart, Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children
  • Professor Wicke, Pokemon Sun and Moon
  • Ms. Joke, My Hero Academia
