Synopsis:

Delivering high quality, economically efficient healthcare is rapidly becoming one of the key economic, societal and scientific challenges in the United States as well as globally. Despite escalating costs, the Nation's healthcare system is underperforming, based on indicators such as infant mortality, life expectancy and life-long healthcare costs per capita. On the other hand, smart phones and wireless data access are now prevalent, allowing continuous extractions of personal data with the many on-board sensors as well as anywhere, anytime delivery and access of information. Smart phone technologies have the potential to play a key role in preventive healthcare and improving wellbeing of the aging society. This course covers topics on mobile computing and smart health with focus the synergy between the two. It will consist of three components:

  1. Lectures on the essentials of mobile computing and smart phone programming
  2. Guest lectures by domain experts in healthcare delivery, sensor technology, and medical devices
  3. Survey and student presentation
  4. Semester long projects on utilizing mobile technology to address health issues. Students will form groups to carry the projects with access to both hardware and software resources including:
    • Windows 7 and Android phones
    • Development SDK, to develop WP7 based cloud-enabled mobile applications
    • TI EZ430-Chronos (pending approval)
